In my day job, I work in a library. Here on the blog, I proofread and read tarot/oracle cards. But, don't we all need a break? We're sleepy and ready to wind down, right? It's the perfect time to hunker down and binge watch. Here are the shows I can't get enough of lately!
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Seasons 1 & 2, Amazon Prime)
The show focuses on our girl, Midge Maisel, on the eve of the most devastating night of her life. But like any good Amy Sherman-Palladino heroine, she turns it around. She manages to make a name for herself as a stand-up comedian in the late 1950s. Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Midge, is a wonder. Tony Shaloub and Marin Hinkle shine as Midge's parents. (But, seriously, everyone in this cast is A+. Luke Kirby gets Honorable Mention for an excellent performance as real-life comedian, Lenny Bruce. His chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan is e-l-e-c-t-r-i-c.)
To watch if: you love snappy dialogue, need a girl-power fueled pick-me-up, or if you love showbiz comedies.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Season 1, Netflix)
I watched the 90s Melissa Joan Hart vehicle, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch back in the day. (Remember when it was part of ABC's TGIF line-up? When you had to see what was happening with Cory and Topanga on Boy Meets World? Do you remember that crazy time-travel crossover shtick they did?) I wasn't sure how I felt about the revival. Until I watched it. THIS CAST. THE BAD-ASS HEROES/HEROINES/NON-BINARY POWERFUL PEOPLE. THE MOODY WITCH VIBE.
It ticks all of my boxes and I'm officially obsessed. Kiernan Shipka has grown as an actress from her Mad Men days. It is so fun to watch her work as Sabrina comes into her own. Lucy Davis, who plays Aunt Hilda, played Etta Candy in Wonder Woman. It was a small role but she easily stole the spotlight from Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. I love watching her version of Aunt Hilda--compassion is a superpower, people! We won't be getting season 2 until April but the trailer looks amazing!
To watch if: you're a witch, you struggle between the Path of Light and the Path of Night, and/or, you believe that women should be in charge of EVERYTHING.
Out on the Lanai: A Golden Girls Podcast, hosted by Kerri Doherty and H. Alan Scott
Golden Girls is one of those shows that you can put on and nearly everyone will enjoy it. The writing has also stood the test of time. Don't believe me? Watch an episode right now. If you didn't laugh at least once, I'm not sure what to say.
If you love the show, check out Out on the Lanai. Kerry and H. Alan are friends who adore Golden Girls. They get together with a guest, watch the show, and sit down after to discuss it. They have a lot of fun facts about the guest stars, the writers, and the ladies. I listen to it while I knit. How Sophia of me.
To listen to: if you love Golden Girls or if you want to know more about it!
What are some of your faves? Happy (almost) New Year!
